What Is Scenes From a Hat?

Scenes From a Hat is one of the most popular improv games in the world — and a regular favorite at Sunday Improv. The host reads a suggestion from the "hat" (in our case, the host has a list, and the audience can shout out scenes), and players jump in to perform a quick scene or one-liner based on the prompt. Then the host moves to the next suggestion.

It's fast, funny, and perfect for beginners because there's zero pressure to carry a long scene.

How It Works at Sunday Improv

  1. Players line up - on the left side of the stage
  2. The host reads a prompt out aloud — something like "Things you shouldn't say on a first date"
  3. Players step up on the stage and delivers their line at the mic
  4. It repeats — once the laughs land, next person goes up on stage, and you can go back in the line!

The key is speed. Don't overthink it. The first thing that comes to mind is usually the funniest.

Tips for Players

Why It's a Crowd Favorite

Scenes From a Hat gives everyone a chance to shine. You don't need improv experience to play — just a willingness to be silly. The audience loves it because the suggestions come from them, and the players love it because there's no wrong answer.
